Chapter Six

As February flowed slowly into March, temperatures warmed a bit, but not enough for the cautious residents of Cooper’s Cove to hail the onset of spring just yet.

For Cassie it seemed as if every waking moment was spent either at the shop, or helping out with Sofie’s science project.

Ms. Pringle, the town librarian, had sent over several books on the solar system for Cassie to study with a stern admonishment that it was science fair project time in town and science books were at a premium. She sternly admonished that the books were to be returned promptly. Or else.

Cassie feared the woman too much to ask what the “or else” was, so she made sure she walked the books back to the library a day before they were due—just to be on the safe side.

She wasn’t quite sure how or when it had happened, but sometime during the past month she and her mom and Sofie had begun having dinner with Beau, Jasper and Shorty several times a week. It just seemed easiest with Beau and Jasper helping Sofie with her project and Jasper and her mom spending almost every other waking moment together.

Apparently there was a great deal more involved with building an exact replica of the solar system than Cassie had ever envisioned, judging by the number of hours everyone was putting into the project.

At times it seemed as if they were all one big, happy family. And that left Cassie feeling a bit confused.

She’d had a hard time keeping her feelings for Beau in check when she wasn’t seeing him nearly every day, and now that she was seeing him so often, it was getting harder and harder to control all the emotions Beau evoked.

They were still just friends in spite of all the time they’d spent together, so Cassie decided that she just wasn’t going to think about her feelings anymore.

In keeping with her plans to update and renovate the shop, Cassie had arranged to have the wood floors refinished one day in late March. She’d specifically not booked any appointments past two on that day so the workers could have the shop to themselves that afternoon. But on the afternoon they were due to arrive, Cassie was unusually busy and completely forgot they were coming. She had hired two new stylists, as well as a new nail tech, and word of mouth about all the new services she was offering had spread like wildfire. Now her clientele wasn’t just residents of Cooper’s Cove, but women from the surrounding towns as well. Business was booming and she couldn’t be happier.

Not wanting to turn away any business, she still had a shop full of customers when the floor finishing crew arrived shortly after two. She merely stared at the crew manager in shock when he stomped up to her styling station.

“Lady, what are you doing?” He glanced around the crowded shop with a scowl. “You gotta get rid of everyone. We can’t work around all these people.
